The oceans represent a key source for feeding a growing global population, but—unlike agriculture—their productivity depends on the natural capacity of ecosystems, not on external inputs. In Mexico, more than two million people depend on fishing, with artisanal fishing being the most promising for transitioning to sustainability. However, overfishing, illegal fishing, and environmental degradation are critical obstacles. The solution lies in effective fisheries governance, better information, product traceability, and respect for the natural limits of marine ecosystems.
